Privacy Policy

Percentl ("we", "us") makes a digital-wellbeing analytics app that turns your Android usage into a personal picture and shows how you compare — anonymously — to people in your area. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your choices. For a plain-English summary, see How your data is handled.

1. Who we are

Percentl is operated from India. For any privacy question or request, contact privacy@percentl.com.

2. Information we collect

We collect only what powers a feature you can see:

• App-usage statistics — time spent per app, the app's category, session counts, and device unlocks. These come from Android's Usage Access permission. We do not read anything inside your apps (no messages, content, keystrokes, or screens).
• Home region — the city (and state/country) you select. This is a coarse, city-level value used only for benchmarking. We do not collect GPS or precise location. If you use "Use my location", your device resolves an approximate area to a city on the device; only the chosen city (and its fixed city-centre coordinates) is sent — never your actual coordinates.
• Optional demographics — age and gender, only if you choose to provide them, to refine your comparison cohort.
• A device/panel identifier — a random identifier generated on your device so each device counts once and benchmarks stay fair. It is not a hardware ID.
• Advertising ID — only if you opt in to personalized ads. This is the resettable advertising ID Android provides. We use it solely for ad attribution and advertising. Your usage or screen-time data is never used to choose your ads, and your advertising ID is never included in our benchmarking or analytics data. You can turn it off anytime in You (we then delete it from our servers), or reset/limit it in Android settings. If you decline, Percentl works exactly the same — you simply see non-personalized ads. If you have limited ad tracking on your device, we do not collect it at all.
• Account credentials — when you sign in with Google or email, an authentication account is created. Your email is used only to secure and recover your account; it is never stored alongside your usage data.
• Friend Circles (optional) — if you create or join a Circle, we store the circle's name, its invite code, its member list, the display name you choose to show, and the daily and weekly screen-time totals you agree to share within it. A Circle never includes which apps you use, your app categories, or any location — only your top-line totals. Circles are entirely optional and share nothing until you explicitly opt in to a specific circle.
• Technical/diagnostic data — standard information such as app version, device model, OS version, and a truncated IP prefix used for security and abuse-prevention.

3. How we use your information

• To show your metrics — screen time, trends, unlocks, categories, and your daily picture.
• To compute your percentile versus your city, state, and country. Before your usage enters our analytics, your identifier is replaced with a one-way hash, and you are only compared within cohorts of 1,000 or more people, so no individual is identifiable in a benchmark.
• To run Friend Circles — a private group you create or join to compare screen-time totals with people you invite. This is optional and stays off until you opt in to a specific circle.
• To secure your account, prevent abuse, and keep the service running.
• If you opt in, to support the ads that keep Percentl free — measuring which channels bring new users, and letting our advertising partner personalize ads via your advertising ID. Your usage or screen-time data is never used to choose which ads you see.

4. Legal basis

Where GDPR applies, we rely on your consent (given in the app before any collection) and our legitimate interest in operating a secure service. Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, we process your data on the basis of the notice and consent presented in the app. You can withdraw consent at any time by turning off Usage Access or deleting your data.

5. How we share information

• We do not sell your personal data, and we never share your usage or screen-time data with advertisers. Percentl is ad-supported — our advertising partner (Google) serves the ads. If you opt in to personalized ads, we share only your advertising ID with them, never your usage data, so ads can be personalized from the profile they already hold for your device across other apps. You can opt out anytime in You, and we delete your advertising ID from our servers.
• Friend Circles — sharing with people you choose. When you create or join a Circle, the other members of that circle can see your display name and your daily and weekly screen-time totals — only the totals, never which apps you use and never your location. This happens only after you explicitly opt in to that specific circle, only within that circle, and only with people you invite or whose invite code you enter. You can leave any circle at any time, which stops further sharing and removes your shared totals from it. This is the only case where another person can see any of your data, and we never share Circle data with advertisers or other third parties.
• We use trusted infrastructure providers (Google Cloud Platform / Firebase) to host and process data under their contractual and security terms.
• Any published or business insights are aggregate and anonymized (subject to the 1,000-person minimum) and never identify an individual.
• We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users and service.

6. Where your data is stored

Your data is stored and processed on Google Cloud infrastructure in India (asia-south1). It is encrypted in transit and at rest.

7. Data retention & deletion

We keep your data while your account is active. You can delete everything at any time from You → Delete your data in the app. Deletion removes your account, profile, and the link between you and your data immediately, and permanently purges the underlying usage records — fully purged within 30 days. Leaving a Circle removes your shared totals from it, and deleting your data also removes you from every Circle you belong to. You can also request deletion by emailing privacy@percentl.com.

8. Your rights

Depending on your location, you have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data, and to withdraw consent. You can exercise deletion directly in the app; for other requests, contact privacy@percentl.com and we'll respond within a reasonable time.

9. Security

We protect your data with encryption, authenticated access, app-attestation (App Check), least-privilege service accounts, and strict server-side validation that rejects any data we've promised never to collect (such as precise location or hardware IDs).

10. Children

Percentl is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the product evolves. We'll post the new version here and update the "Last updated" date; material changes will be highlighted in the app.
